Within that box is an indication as to just what it might mean to him: a faded, worn piece of paper with the names 'Viola and Gascoigne' just barely legible on it, 'Viola' being his wife. Considering that this was the only thing that would initially force him out of his blood lust, it speaks a lot of just how he felt about his wife. That his affection for her would, if even only until the next hunt, stave off the worst effects of the plague, indicates a monumental amount of power behind that emotion. Viola's death only came about when she rushed into the night without the music box itself, implying that she never could have fathomed that her husband would have attacked her, and that the music box had not been in such regular use that grabbing it would become second nature. She trusted him implicitly, though without the music box to burn away the shadows in his mind, this lead to her undoing. He was also partnered with Henryk, and together, they made for a dangerously competent duo. Henryk's partnership with Gascoigne as a hunter pair lead to the man's 'tragically long life', as lore would say, which suggests that Gascoigne made a pointed effort to ensure that when two men walked out the door that night, two men would walk back in when the sun began to rise. When he finds himself fond of someone, that attachment is powerful, and the bond he forms is nearly iron clad.

+Respectful: There are two lines that Gascoigne states that indicates the hunter had respect for the beasts he fought. Indeed, while he was brutal in combat, unrelenting and unmerciful to the point of mania, his goal was always singular: to put the beast to a quick, and far nobler end than living out their days as an animal. In removed dialog, he states: “Sick creature, may you rest in peace. Umbasa”, 'Umbasa' being the equivalent to 'amen', as he puts what he is sure is a plague stricken citizen to rest. In the dialog within the game, after the Good Hunter has been struck down, he still yet refrains from any gloating or mockery, saying: “too proud to show your face, eh? But a sporting hunt, it was”, in recognition of the Hunter's prowess in battle. While this might not always translate well to common conversation or life outside of the hunt, he acknowledges and appreciates strength.

+/- Fearless: Once an effect from imbibing blood, it's now become a symptom of the plague. Of course his apparent inability to feel fear presents itself most openly while in combat, it has other ways of revealing itself even while he's calm. Speaking of terrible, violent matters without expressing distress, in his blunt and forward demeanor now exacerbated. He seems particularly careless about his own well being, not only in charging into combat, but in his disregard of how long he's spent out in the beast-filled streets of Yharnam, and in his open willingness to attack anything and everything that moves. Intimidation has no effect on him, calm or lost in blood lust, and while this makes him a fearsome opponent, this also causes him to make terrible choices, and leaves him unable to gauge when he should stop or flee.

-Low willpower: A result of the beast plague, and of his position as a hunter. He was capable of fighting the effects of the plague for a long time, as he'd no doubt been a hunter in Yharnam for over a decade before the plague took him. That long a period of time with the constant pressure of base animal instincts attempting to overtake him and bearing witness to the terrible, horrific monsters that prowl the city eventually wore away his ability to resist it. He was incapable of stopping himself from attacking his wife on the night of the hunt, the plague blackening his memory of her face and voice, and unable to keep himself from then slaughtering the other Yharnamites near him. In the end, his swiftly eroding will crumbled away entirely, and he fully succumbed to the beast plague, broken by the horror of what he'd done. Just enough of his mind remained that, upon his death, his final words were 'forgive me', before he faded away into nothing.

-Violent: A symptom of the beast plague. While normally fairly level headed and difficult to enrage, once he has passed that tipping point and is ready for a fight, it's almost impossible to slow him down again. Once in battle, Gascoigne delights in carnage, the bloodier the better, chasing the high that imbibing blood bestows upon him now. Being attacked only makes the desire to fight more powerful, and once he's set his sights upon a target, his focus narrows and his thoughts become one track.

-Poor self control: A symptom of the beast plague. Gascoigne has a lot of difficulty containing his urges, especially when his emotions are high. He was never a terribly subtle man, but while under the more violent effects of the plague, he's nearly without inhibition. Any thought that enters his head can be carried out without hesitation or question. Outside of combat and while calm, this manifests as a tenuous grasp of personal space, at best. Without proper use of his eyes, he has his other four senses to go off of, and not a lot of self regulation standing between himself and trying to catch someone's scent.

-Blunt: While this could be written off as a symptom.... Father Gascoigne was no doubt never very tactful. Even in his deleted commentary, before he lost his mind, he was at best often uncomfortably cordial, and possessed a sense of gallows humor. Even before he battles the hunter, he takes the time to tell them that they too will succumb to the plague, “sooner or later”, a direct assessment with nothing to soften the blow. He won't see an issue with telling someone precisely what he thinks of a situation, of what is expected of him, and of what he thinks of the person themselves. Typically not with the intention of seeming insulting, but also without much care should it be seen that way. No doubt, due to his work, the ability to relay information as quickly and clearly as possible would be seen as a necessity, and considering how much he seems to enjoy his work, he probably sees no reason to phone in that behavior on his off hours. He'd be aware of course, that perhaps he's being a bit too direct, and considering his status as a father and husband, as well as being a well liked father and husband, might even feel compelled to apologize for his mannerisms.

-Intemperate: Addicted to blood, Gascoigne's ability to regulate himself without it has become severely damaged. Imbibing blood soothes fear and dilutes pain, and it can quickly become an addictive and destructive habit, to the point where the drinkers eyes begin to deteriorate. Gascoigne has reached this point. This has pushed him to the point of excess in his hunts, to where he'd do nearly anything for the sake of blood. He fears the return of humanity unto an extent, fears the return of fear and pain, and would rather lose himself in drink than confront it. It's this addiction to blood that caused him to lose his mind in the first place, to lose himself in the hunt, and then to eventually kill his wife in a fit of blood lust. His inability to control his addiction ended in him being unable to control his own desires and actions, and ultimately lead to his total descent into beasthood, and finally, to his own death at the hands of the Good Hunter.

Powers and Abilities: Father Gascoigne has no immediately incredible abilities. While certainly far more powerful physically than the average human, as long as he is indeed still human, he's simply on the very top tier of human ability, rather than being super human. Thus he's weak to anything else that would hurt a human, though he can take a lot of pain before he goes down. As for other abilities, his sense of smell is far superior to that of a human, comparable to that of an actual hound. His hearing is as well far keener than a human being.

If for whatever reason something happens in game where he is forced to transform, he will have increased speed, highly enhanced strength, and beast like claws and teeth as well as enhanced durability. However, since he can't really change back after this, it's safe to say this won't happen unless he's going to die not too long after the fact.

Inventory: Hunter's ax
Hunter's pistol
Tiny music box

Samples: TDM

comments
